Got a fast food craving? This news might sober you up (in case you were thinking about making a trip through the drive through)...
Yes, a splurge now and then is totally cool, but in general, stay away from the drive through, at least, that's the message from researchers at the University of Toronto. Fat and calories and chemicals aside, they found that the grease-proof paper wrappings used for fast food (oh, and also microwave popcorn) may be loaded with perfluoroalkyls, which are synthetic chemicals created to help repel oil, grease and water. And, yes, when you eat fast food, you're likely to eat these chemicals too.
InHabitots reports that studies show that PFOAs and other perfluoroalkyls "can cause changes in sex hormones and cholesterol. During studies of PFOAs, rats and mice who have been exposed to PFOAs have experienced both early death and delayed development and some rats even developed tumors due to long-term PFOA exposure."
