When Jersey Shore Meets The Importance of Being Earnest..

Oh, Jersey Shore. For some, the show is a total guilty pleasure. And some folks just can’t stand it. But even if you’re not a fan, I think you’ll get quite a kick out of this funny new video getting lots of play around the web.

I spotted this bit of awesomeness of Jezebel earlier today. Two actors starring in a Broadway production of The Importance of Being Earnest decided to mix things up Shore style. Using transcripts from Jersey Shore, the actors imagine show how things might have looked if the shore kids lived it up in Oscar Wilde’s world.

Ah, the importance of being earnestly concerned about your hair gel!
I can’t stop giggling over this ridiculous. Hmm, what’s up next? The cast of Macbeth taking on The Real Housewives?

101 Ways to be Happy

Post image for 101 Ways to be Happy
Do you want to be happy? Of course you do, who doesn’t?!  Here are 101 easy ways to achieve a better, happier life!

It’s not things that make us happy but our experiences.
Travel can have a profound effect on us by taking us out of our comfort zones and opening our eyes to some of the different places and lives that were unknown to us. It’s also just fun!
We’re obviously big fans of travel, but what else can make you happy?

Read on for 101 ways to change your life for the better:

TRAVEL
1) Travel when you can. Travel can open your eyes to the world and offer a fresh new perspective.
2) Take a weekend trip. If you haven’t got the funds for a jaunt to Paris, no matter. Even a weekend or day long break from home can make you happier.
3) Spend time by the ocean. There’s nothing like sand between your toes and fresh sea air.
4) Go camping. Commune with nature closer to home—the food will taste better and you’ll sleep deeper in the great outdoors.
5) Go skydiving. Face your fears and reap the benefits of this exhilarating extreme sport—you’ll be euphoric for weeks.
6) Go stargazing. Find a spot relatively free of unnatural light and marvel at the beauty of the night sky.
7) Sit in front of a beautiful view. Find a spot close by with a nice view that you can visit when you need a break.

WORK
8 ) Make enough money to meet your basic needs. Studies have shown that anything beyond that amount will not necessarily make you happier.
9) Avoid financial hierarchies. For a new job, choose a place where everyone makes a similar amount. People feel better when they feel equal to their co-workers.
10) Find satisfaction in the job you have. Don’t expect to find one job that will make you happy—instead focus on the positive aspects of your work instead of blaming a job for your unhappiness.
11) Take initiative at work. You’ll gain professional respect, self-fulfillment and feel more in control in the workplace.
12) Keep plants in your workspace. The LA Times found that employees who decorate their office space are more satisfied with their jobs.
13) Bake cookies and bring them to work. You’ll enjoy the baking and making your co-workers happy.

HEALTH
14) Get enough sleep. Sleeping for 8 hours per night can elevate your mood and better prepare you to greet the day.
15) Take vitamin C. Keeping your immune system happy will keep you happy.
16) Laugh out loud. Laughing releases endorphins and lowers levels of stress hormones.
17) Cook with more garlic. Garlic not only adds delicious flavor to meals, it also keeps blood pressure down to keep you relaxed and healthy.
18) Get more fresh air. Fresh air is invigorating and alters the levels of serotonin in your brain—the stuff that makes you happy!
19) Eat more foods with tryptophan. It has an amino acid needed to make serotonin, the chemicals that make you happy. Try more bananas, dairy products and poultry.
20) Work out. Exercising can not only make you feel better about yourself, it also releases endorphins in your body to give you a natural high.
21) Eat chocolate. Besides releasing endorphins and stimulating serotonin production in your brain, chocolate releases phenylethylamine, the chemical that causes feelings of love.
22) Meditate. According to the Dalai Lama as well as several medical studies, meditation not only decreases stress, but also triggers a neurological response that makes you happy.
23) Do yoga. Learning to control your breathing through yoga practice helps you control your responses to stress and fear.
24) Get a massage. Besides its relaxing properties, the touch involved in massage creates warmth in your body and releases the chemical oxytocin—also known as the cuddle hormone.
25) Eat chickpeas (or other beans). Chickpeas have an amino acid that makes you happy, and beans keep your sugar levels steady throughout the day.
26) Have sex. Numerous studies show that a healthy sexual intimacy with a caring partner can have tremendous physical and emotional benefits.
27) Install more windows in your house. Getting enough exposure to the sun has been proven to be crucial to happiness and well-being.
28) Put full-spectrum lights in your home or office. If you live in a wintry climate that doesn’t get much sun, you can replicate the effect with light bulbs that mimic the sun’s rays.
29) Drink coffee. Studies in Brazil showed that people who drink coffee every day are less likely to suffer from depression. Coffee is the world’s most popular mood-enhancing drug, but remember to drink in moderation
30) Eat more spinach. Popeye’s favorite green is packed with folic acid, an important vitamin that boosts serotonin production.
31) Eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Certain kinds of fish like salmon or sardines have Omega-3, which is known to elevate mood levels—high doses are even used to treat depression.
32) Eat more colorful fruits and vegetables. They contain antioxidants which help remove toxins from our bodies that cause stress and aging.
33) Put some strawberries in your breakfast. The smell of strawberries is known to invigorate and energize.
34) Drink hot mint tea. The scent of fresh mint is energizing and the steam will perk you up.

ATTITUDE
35) Smile. It takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown.
36) Make a grateful list. Focus on all the great things in your life to enhance feelings of joy and attract more good things.
37) Break outside your comfort zone. Being comfortable doesn’t make you happy—challenging yourself does.
38) Follow your gut. Most of the time your first instinct is not only correct, but the best choice.
39) Don’t regret your decisions. If it turns out you were wrong, don’t waste time worrying about it, instead make the next best decision and move forward.
40) Accept that you can’t be happy all the time. Focus on being content and the truly happiness will be all that much sweeter.
41) Try to see from others’ perspectives. Much of our unhappiness comes from our frustration with other people not understanding us. Try to imagine how they see the world and the frustration will ease.
42) Let the little things go. There’s no sense in wasting your energy and inhibiting your happiness by worrying about things you can’t change.
43) Make the decision to be happy. Happiness is an attitude, not a physical state.
44) Don’t take things personally. So often, anger and frustration directed at us is a result of someone else’s misplaced stress. Recognize that it’s not necessarily about you and you’ll remain calmer and happier.
45) Savor the small moments. People who take longer to enjoy small moments and then reflect on them later in the day show significant increases in happiness.
46) Avoid comparing yourself to others. It’s damaging to self-esteem—focus on your own achievements.
47) Make meaningful goals. Harvard scientists say humans need a sense of purpose to thrive and that people with dreams and aspirations are happier than those without.
48) Embrace spirituality. Research suggests that people who participate in a religious community or explore alternate sets of beliefs are happier and better adjusted in life.
49) Have a good cry when you need it. Allowing yourself to break down completely is cathartic and you’ll feel better after you let it all out.
50) Learn to forgive yourself. Focusing on your past mistakes serves no purpose besides keeping you from moving on.
51) Maintain perspective. When life starts to feel out of control, remind yourself of the positive things in your life and how lucky you are.
52) Define what happiness means for you. Don’t worry about what other people define as happy, find what makes you happy and go for it.

RELATIONSHIPS
53) Stay close to friends and family. Moving far away from networks of support can take a toll on your level of happiness—even if you have moved in order to make more money.
54) Get a dog. The studies showing the positive effects man’s best friend can have on your psyche are numerous: better emotional and physical health and a wagging tail.
55) Give more hugs. Hugging releases the same chemical as massage and is always free!
56) Make time for your friends. Personal connections are so important and making even a little time to be with people who make you smile can keep you happy.
57) Make new friends. Meeting other people is exciting and finding a new person with whom to connect can only enhance your fulfillment.
58) Write thank-you notes. Expressing gratitude makes you and the recipient happy.
59) Call your mom. Or your dad, or your grandma or anyone you haven’t talked to in a while and surprise them with a chat.
60) Get a cat. If you’re not a dog person, cats make wonderful, loving, stress-reducing housemates and bed-warmers.
61) Cuddle up with someone you love. Enjoy time with your kids or your partner for instant happiness.
62) Babysit for a friend. Being around children’s infectious optimism is sure to boost your mood.
63) Hold a baby. They’re cute and cuddly and without a care in the world—you’ll feel instantly uplifted.

ACTIVITIES
64) De-clutter. A clean home is a clean mind, and you’ll feel better in an orderly environment.
65) Donate to charity. Giving to those less fortunate than you will make you appreciate what you have.
66) Rent a comedy. Take an hour and a half out of your day for pure laughing entertainment and you’ll feel instantly boosted.
67) Watch kittehroulette.com. If watching nonstop videos of playful kittens doesn’t lift your spirits, nothing will.
68) Take a nap. A quick power nap, especially on a sunny afternoon, is luxurious and will help you make it through the day.
69) Change one thing in your daily routine. You’ll stave off boredom and might discover something new that delights you.
70) Take a walk. Taking a quick walk, even just around the block can clear your mind and raise your mood.
71) Surround yourself with smells that make you happy. Smell is a much overlooked sense that greatly affects our mood—try a coconut shampoo that reminds you of a vacation or bake cookies that remind you of childhood.
72) Listen to upbeat music. Even just a few minutes of a hip-shaking tune gets your blood flowing and makes you feel more positive.
73) Set your alarm early on a day you know you get to sleep in. When you wake up you’ll get the pleasure of realizing that you don’t have to get out of bed—then rolling over for some more satisfying zzz’s.
74) Paint a room in your house yellow. Looking at the color yellow has been proven to improve moods.
75) Make a home cooked-meal. You’ll get not only tasty food, but the pride of having made it yourself.
76) Dress up for no reason. Putting on clothes that make you feel good increases your self-esteem and your mood.
77) Add some soft blue to your bedroom. Light blue has been shown to be the most calming color and can set the mood for a restful night’s sleep—essential to a positive attitude.
78) Do something you loved as a kid. Riding a roller-coaster or going sledding can help you connect to your inner child and remember simple thrills.
79) Wear red. Red can make us feel confident, powerful and strong.
80) Splash on some perfume/aftershave. Studies show that floral scents can make you happier.
81) Volunteer your time. Selfless acts and helping others is a fast route to genuine contentment.
82) Decorate your home for the holidays. Preparing for holiday celebrations is always fun and a great excuse to invite friends and family over.
83) Take time for yourself. Go to a movie, or a museum or a walk around town by yourself to re-connect.
84) Perform random acts of kindness. Hold open a door for a stranger or leave some money in the vending machine, for no other reason than doing something nice for your fellow man.
85) Send snail-mail. Rediscover the pleasure of old-fashioned communication.
86) Make time to curl up with a good book. It can be either a thought-provoking tome or a guilty pleasure.
87) Invest in fancy bedding. Be cozy and happy drifting to sleep and wake up to a happy morning.
88) Go bowling with friends. Throw back to your younger years, and bonus points for matching shirts.
89) Dance. Alone or at a club, dancing is fun and stress-releasing.
90) Pay off your credit card debt. Debt can be a major source of stress and you’ll feel great when you eliminate it from your life.
91) Clean the house. Even if you don’t like cleaning, a clean home can drastically improve your attitude.
92) Volunteer at a local animal shelter. You’ll get the pleasure of knowing you’re lending your time and brightening the day of some furry friends.
93) Find a hobby. Painting, singing, tai chi—it doesn’t matter as long as you have an outlet to express yourself.
94) Turn off your phone for a day. Let people know in advance that you are taking a personal day and can only be reached in case of emergency. Savor the silence.
95) Sing in the shower. It doesn’t matter what you sing, just make sure you belt it as loud as possible.
96) Stash some money in a secret place so you can discover it later. Pick a spot you’re likely to forget so you get a thrill weeks or months later when you stumble on it.
97) Enjoy a guilty pleasure TV show. Make some popcorn and banish the guilt—we all need a cheesy escape sometimes.
98) Go for a walk or jog in the rain. The high produced by exercise will be heightened by the cool rain on your face.
99) Enjoy a cold beer or chilled wine on a hot day. Need I say more?
100) Go to hear live music. Hearing music live puts you in the moment in a way an iPod can’t.

And finally 101,
Share with others! Tell us what makes you happy—the places you’ve been or the things you’ve done–we can all learn from each other!

Boracay :)

Each Boracay experience is truly unique and the island never fails to surprise or amuse you with its cuisines, parties, sceneries, chillout places, shopping, and people.  I would like to give you a glimpse of what happens in Bora. Here are a few suggestions on how to make your boracay escape a truly memorable experience:

1. Signature Boracay Experience
A Boracay experience is not complete without these time-tested Boracay traditions:
choco banana jonas shakebanana boatnami massage
  • Sipping Jonas Milkshake while watching the sunset.
  • Flipping over a wild banana boat ride with your friends
  • Having a massage by the beach with virgin coconut oil

2. The Beach Bum look

Two-piece swimsuit is in. I've never seen Boracay soo bold with girls wearing two-piece suit as a standard and if you are wearing one piece -- it is either your old or your fat. I was shocked or maybe I was just old that I'm not been in Boracay for quite a long time. Boracay is a great place to be young and free. So what if you don't have a two-piece suit and you are shy to wear your one-piece after reading this? Don't worry, there is the famous "Paolo Collection" swimwear line in the d'Mall where you can find quality but cheap two-piece suit.
two piece is inpaolo swimwearscenes at d mall2
Henna Tattoos are a must! Almost all Boracay goers have a Henna Tattoo or a glitter Tattoo which serves as a trademark that you have been to Boracay. In our group, the young ones definitely got one while the young once shy away from this. Just a word of caution: the henna tattoos smudges with sweat and it would take you two weeks to remove. Also, there are some people who are allergic to Henna so be very careful. If you are determined to get a henna, get one in the morning, place it where you won't sweat easily and it should definitely be seen. I loved watching women with henna tattoos on their lower back.

Puka Shells/ Bead Necklaces. Boracay is full of vendors of necklaces. Be sure to get one to accessorize your look or bring one as a "pasalubong" to your friends or family.

3. Island Hopping around Boracay Island

Island hopping is one of the boracay plus experience that you should definitely do that would consume a half day of your itinerary. You need to negotiate with a banca boatmen preferably associated with your beach resort. The costs depends on how many you are, and how long is the trip. Here's a tip: make sure that you call him by his name when negotiating and you should know or pretend to know the places you would go to. Here are recommended places to visit/stop over:
  • Snorkeling near crocodile island and drinking fresh buko juice after.
  • Stopping over for lunch at Puka Grande, in Puca beach.
  • Appreciating the beauty of the Nami Villas. (try to inquire and see their breathtaking rooms)

4. Dining and Chilling out with style

There are alot of good restaurants in Boracay and places to chill out for the night. Since you only have a limited time in this island paradise, you need to carefully plan out your dining adventures. Here are my favorites:
  • Gasthof Restaurant in d'mall. Yummy Filipino grilled food right in the center of d'mall.
  • Aria Italian Restaurant in d'mall. The food is simply unforgettable.
  • Happy Hour at Cocomangas -- buy 1 take 1 drinks with Chori Burger on the side.
  • Chilling out with cool music at BomBom -- this is where the likes of Paolo Santos hangs out

Other options:
Manana Mexican Food in station 1 beside cocomangas.
Caribo Restaurant in Station 2
True Food Indian Restaurant in Station 2 before boracay regency
Victory Thailand Restaurant in Station 2 right after boracay regency
Crepes St. Michel de Boracay in d'mall
Smoke Resto at the back of d'mall where you can buy food in the market and they'll cook it for you.
5. Drinking and Dancing the night away in Boracay
The Station 1 party places are still the coolest place in Bora. This includes Pier 1 Beachcomber, Cocomangas and the spill over bar in the middle Club Paraw. If you want to be wasted for the night, here are my recommended drinks for you and you'll surely dance the night away.
  • Jam Jar Drink and Illusion Shaker at Cocomangas
  • Weng Weng Drink at Bombom
  • Slammer and Beer Bong at Pier 1 Beachcomber.

If you are planning to be wasted, make sure that there are no evidences (you don't want to create another scandal) and remember the Boracay motto "What happens in Boracay, Stays in Boracay!!"

5 Princes Who Are Still Up for Grabs!

With the royal wedding just days away, I’d say your ship has sailed if you were planning on stealing away Prince William at the 11th hour. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of royals out there!
Here, five of the most eligible princes in the world. And by “eligible” I mean they’re not engaged. We’re not going to let some silly little girlfriends mess up our fun, right?

Which of these princes would you marry?

Prince Harry of Wales
0405-harry_we.jpg

Prince William’s 26-year-old kid brother gets all the perks of being a royal, but doesn’t have to worry about that messy “second in line for the throne” business.

Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark
0405-philippos_we.jpg

One prince, two kingdoms! The 24-year-old’s father is the king of Greece and his mother is the princess of Denmark. So I bet, as his wife, you’d get access to two sets of crown jewels! Whee!

Prince Andrea of Monaco
0405-andrea_we.jpg

Yes, your prince would have prettier hair than you. But he’s the son of Princess Caroline—aka, the grandson of Grace Kelly—so it’s not really is fault. p.s. Is it just me, or does he sort of look like Jasper from Twilight?

Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg
0405-guillaume_we.jpg

This 29-year-old is next in line for the crown. He has a thing for fellow royals, so be sure to polish your tiaras before you plan your run-in.

Prince Carl Philip of Sweden
0405-carl-philip-of-sweden_we.jpg

Carl Philip, 31, was first in line for the throne of Sweden, but the laws were changed shortly after his birth, and now his sister’s first and he’s No. 2. I still wouldn’t kick him out of bed, if you know what I mean.

Christine Reyes Loves Patola

Talk about double entendre! Christine Reyes’ Public Service ad features her holding what else, but a smooth and long patola. This witty ad sure could grab the viewer’s attention. The question is, would this inspire them to eat a patola? Probably yes if you know what I mean *snickers*.

KC Concepcion on "The View"

Actress, TV host and singer KC Concepcion appeared on the US talk show The View last week, reports ABS-CBN News citing a report by The Buzz.

In New York for the Star Magic tour, Concepcion joined the queue to be part of the studio audience of the TV show with actor Enchong Dee. According to The Buzz, producers of The View asked her to do a spiel before a commercial break with one of the show hosts, Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Dee said "yes" for her.

Afterwards, Concepcion Tweeted, "An unexpected surprise haha. And she's (Hasselbeck) even prettier in person."

Summer Stay-cation Ideas

If you’re the type who would go on vacation as soon as summer starts, then you probably have spent all your dough by now. And you have the pictures on Facebook to prove it. But you still want some summer action. The way to do is to go on a staycation, which Wikipedia defines as “a period of time in which [people] stay at home and relaxes at home or take day trips from their home to area attractions.” It doesn’t involve a lot of cash and all you need to do is to treat it like a real vacation. Here are some inexpensive activities you can do on your staycation:

1. Go on an all-out food trip day. Drive or commute around the city from morning till night just trying everything you see. You can have specific destinations (like the fabulous isaw place in UP Diliman and other places you’ve always been meaning to go to but never had the chance). You can have a theme (like everything Italian, for example). Of course, you can also just play it by ear.

2. Have a race to wherever. Divide into groups and race from one end of the metropolis to the other (yes, just like The Amazing Race). Make it more fun by having rules. For example, teams must go through all SM Malls and take pictures as proof. You can also set a budget for transportation for a level playing field. Get creative and have lots of fun!

3. Sun by the pool. Getting a tan is not exclusive to the beach, as some beach-lovers would like to believe. You can do it in your own backyard. But if you want a really vacation feel to it, do it by the pool. If you don’t have your own pool, surely you know someone who has one or lives in a building that has one. Get your crew together and let it all hang out at 50 stories high.

4. Camp out back. Out back on the yard, that is. Treat it like a real camping experience, which means no one is allowed to enter the house. Pack your bags like you would on a real camping trip, complete with changes of clothes, food, drinks and insect repellants. And don’t forget the tent.

5. Go underground. Not really under the ground, but visit the city’s underground, indie scene. Check out bands, art shows and other non-mainstream activities around the metro for an experience that you’re not used to. This way, you’ll actually feel like you’re in a different place with a different culture. The advantage is that you speak the same language.

6. Go on a best ice cream hunt. Scour the city for the best ice cream. It’s a great summer cooler and being on a staycation is an excuse to ditch your diet for a day. Divide it into categories: “dirty” ice cream, traditional ice cream, gourmet ice cream and gelato.

7. Take a spa-cation. Spend a whole day of pampering and relaxation at the spa. Get a mani-pedi, a facial, a massage and indulge in the luxuriously detoxifying experience. Spend a little more than you normally would. Remember that it’s a vacation and that you’ve already saved on accommodation since you’re staying at home.

8. Host a hotel party. Some hotels and condotels let groups stay in one room or suite for parties. This isn’t going to cost a lot if you have a big group and you’ll be splitting the cost. Bring lots of booze, card and board games and even a few DVDs. This is better than having the party at home because you don’t have to clean up. Just don’t get too wild and trash the place.

9. Play Frisbee. Or any other physical activity that you regularly wouldn’t. An afternoon at the park is a good way to recharge and energize. Participate in something that requires you to move a few muscle and work those sweat glands to help flush out the heat. Just like on a vacation, play with strangers and make new friends.

10. Rediscover the city. Since we live in it, we only usually go to the places where we need to be—our offices, the malls, etc. But do you really know your city? Some tourists who have gone around probably know more than you do. Take a trip around the places you haven’t been to and rediscover your city. Visit landmarks, museums (which you probably last visited as a kid on a school excursion) and other less-traveled places.

Be a BETTER You this Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of preparation for the Easter season when Christians are called to renew their commitments to spiritual practices like Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving. The season is intended as a time for personal conversion leading up to Easter. The belief is that our consistent participation in these practices—like exercise we do for our physical health—is a form of purification that improves our spiritual well-being by stripping away all that is unnecessary and by becoming more mindful of our ultimate dependence on God in our lives. Not sure where to start? Check out these ideas:

1) Go to BustedHalo.com’s® FAST PRAY GIVE Lent Calendar every day to find a new and unusual way to enter into the traditional spiritual disciplines of the Lenten season (Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving). Somehow, for countless people—both Catholic and non-Catholic—Lent has become the time of year in which Catholics give up chocolate. Busted Halo® decided to approach Lent from a completely different perspective this year. In fact, we’re so bored with the whole chocolate-abstinence routine that we’re actually giving chocolate away(fast); contemplating the 1.6 billion people in the world who have no access to electricity for a few moments (pray); and spending the extra time you’ve saved on personal interaction with someone important to you (give)? Or what if people reduced their carbon footprint for a day by using less energy (fast); then reflected for two minutes on the magnificent gift our natural environment is (pray); and finally placed $1 in a bowl they’ve set aside to collect money to be given away to a favorite charity—perhaps one that plants trees—at the end of Lent (give). to our readers during Lent. Instead of chocolate, alcohol or tobacco, what if people thought of fasting, prayer and almsgiving in a broader context? What if those disciplines involved practices like reducing your dependence on electronic devices for twenty four hours

2) Make a commitment to reading the Sunday readings before you go to Mass. In the same way that reading up on football players, opposing teams, and coaching strategies will help you experience a game more fully, familiarizing yourself with the readings ahead of time can allow you to experience them in a deeper way on Sunday.

3) Don’t have time to read all three readings? Then just read the Gospel.

4) Make a commitment to trying something new spiritually. Never tried an hour of Eucharistic adoration? Find a parish where you can try it. Never attended Mass at a parish of an ethnic group that’s different than yours? Give it a try.

5) Think about what you usually spend your money on. Do you buy a few too many clothes? Spend a few too many bucks on iTunes? Eating out? Pick one type of expenditure that you’ll “fast” from during Lent, and give the money you would usually spend to a great local charity.  Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the clichés of “giving up” something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life, and to grow in it.

6)When you first sit down in front of your computer at work, or at the very end of your work day, try a great 10-minute prayer, based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius.

7) Go to a weekday Mass one day during the week. Many parishes offer them early in the morning, at noon, or after work. Daily Masses are often more intimate and informal than Sunday Mass.

8) If you don’t have a cross in your apartment or house, buy a simple one and put it in your bedroom.

9) Read the entire Gospel of Mark in one sitting. As the shortest Gospel, it is the most concise story of Jesus’ life, and the cross, a central Lenten symbol, plays an even more prominent role than in the other Gospels.

10) Attend the Stations of the Cross somewhere—lots of parishes offer these during Lent, and often on Fridays.

11) Get some friends together and attend a Friday fish fry at a parish. Yes, an actual fish fry—not the healthiest thing in the world, but a fun Catholic tradition that’s kind of charming in a throwback sort of way.

12) Turn off your iPod or your car radio on your commute. The silence may be jarring at first, but you may find that you are able to concentrate better and will be more observant of your surroundings.

13) Buy a book of daily reflections and keep it by your bed. Local parishes often offer these for purchase during Lent, and there are some good ones available online. Try the Little Black Books from the Diocese of Saginaw, or reflection books by Edward Hays, sold by Ave Maria Press.

14) Think about a habit that has kept you from being whom God is calling you to be. Consciously give up that habit for Lent.

15) During Lent, we’re called to fast not only from food but from other things as well.

16) Make a commitment to “fast” from cruel comments about others.

17) As a part of your Lenten almsgiving, make a point to learn as much about a particular social issue (immigration, human trafficking, racism, AIDS victims, child poverty) as possible. Give money to an organization, related to your chosen issue that supports the dignity of the human person.

18) Pray for somebody. As you’re walking the streets, driving the highways, sitting in your cubicle at work, or going to a movie, pick out a person who appears to be in need, and pray for that person. Be mindful of the words of Philo of Alexandria, who said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”

19) Lent originated as a time of preparation for people who were preparing for baptism. Those of us who are baptized use Lent as a time of preparation to renew our baptismal promises at Easter. One of the things we promised (or our parents promised for us) at baptism was to renounce sin.

20) As you are waiting to fall asleep at night, pray the Jesus Prayer silently as a mantra: “Lord Jesus, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me.”

21) Read the Works of Mercy as Jesus describes them in Matthew 25. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink…in prison and you visited me.” There are plenty of opportunities available in your own community to put this teaching into practice. Choose an act of service you can perform throughout Lent.

22) Make a list of all the excesses in your life. Think about which ones you could do without.

23) Celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation. Can’t remember how? Simply tell the priest it has been a while, and ask him to guide you through it.

Lent is an annual opportunity to grow in our faith, which means it’s about much more than giving up unhealthy foods or treats, as you may have done when you were a kid. It is about abstaining from whatever is unhealthy in our lives—gossip, laziness, lack of social conscience—and, most importantly, taking concrete steps to do something more. Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the clichés of “giving up” something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life, and to grow in it.
